Street Slab Replacement

Project Summary

Each year, the City replaces approximately 150 concrete street slabs under contract.  City crews replace additional slabs on an emergency basis.  The City marks the locations to be removed and replaced, then the contractor performs the work.

Please note that neither the existing nor new concrete is "colored" concrete.  While there is some limestone-based concrete around the city, most of the concrete contains Meramec sand and gravel, which provides the orange/brown look. While the new concrete initially appears to be a bright white, over time, the color mellows and the top layer of cement wears off, revealing the brown sand and gravel underneath.

Bids were opened 3/27, with Sweetens Concrete Services as the low bidder. The slabs to be replaced are at the intersection of Firethorn/Fawnvalley and on Orpington Court.

Project Update and Schedule

Sweetens hand-delivered this notification letter the week of 5/6. Sawcutting has already occurred, and  removal/replacement will begin the week of 5/13. The work will be done in phases to allow for continued access. Removals for the first phase on Orpington will start Tuesday 5/14, and removals for the first phase on Firethorn should start Thursday 5/16. Both should be poured back in before the end of the week, if all goes well.  The concrete must then cure for at least 5 days before we put traffic back on it. Please view the project maps and look at the layout (white paint) on the street to see which slabs are being replaced.
